At a glance
There is no cure for psoriasis. However, a range of treatment options are available and in most cases, they can keep the symptoms of psoriasis under control.
It is important to remember that no one treatment works for everybody and the way a person responds to a particular treatment may change over time – often a certain degree of trial and error will be needed before the most effective treatment can be found.
Generally, treatments for psoriasis fall into four main categories:
-
Topical therapies: Treatments that are applied directly on to the affected skin.
-
Phototherapies: Ultraviolet light therapies.
-
Conventional systemic therapies: Medicines that are taken as tablets or injections and work on the body as a whole.
-
Biologic therapies: Medications which modify the body’s immune responses. These drugs are given as injections or infusions.
